2026 Gunter Tigers Football Guide: Schedule, Players, Storylines & Everything You Need to Know
In Gunter, football isn’t simply something that happens on Friday nights.
It’s part of the identity of the community.
Few small-school football programs in Texas have produced the sustained success Gunter has over the last decade, and the 2026 Gunter Tigers enter another season carrying expectations that would be extraordinary almost anywhere else.
Five state championships.
Seven state-championship appearances.
A run of district titles stretching back years.
And now, a new classification, a relatively new head coach, another talented roster and another opportunity to write a chapter in one of the strongest football traditions in North Texas.
Welcome to the Grayson County Line 2026 Gunter Tigers Football Guide.
We’ll keep this guide updated throughout the season with scores, standings, playoff information and other developments.
2026 Gunter Tigers at a Glance
School: Gunter High School
Mascot: Tigers
Location: Gunter, Texas
Head Coach / Athletic Director: Jordan Gill
Classification: Class 3A Division I
District: District 5-3A Division I

2026 Record: 0-0 entering the regular season
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists Gunter in Class 3A Division I for 2026, a notable change after the Tigers built their recent championship dynasty in 3A Division II. (Texas Football)
That alone makes the 2026 season fascinating.
Gunter isn’t simply attempting another playoff run.
The Tigers are entering a somewhat different competitive landscape.
One of Texas High School Football’s Great Modern Runs
To understand expectations surrounding Gunter football, you need to understand what this program has accomplished.
Gunter ISD records the following postseason finishes from 2016 through 2024:
2016 — State Champion
2017 — State Finalist
2018 — State Semifinalist
2019 — State Champion
2020 — State Semifinalist
2021 — State Finalist
2022 — State Champion
2023 — State Champion
2024 — State Champion (Gunter ISD)
Read that again.
Over those nine seasons, Gunter reached at least the state semifinals every year.
The Tigers won state championships in:
2016
2019
2022
2023
2024
UIL’s all-time championship records credit Gunter with five championships in seven state-final appearances through the 2024 season. (University Interscholastic League)
That puts the 2026 team in an unusual position.
The goal isn’t merely making the playoffs.
At Gunter, the standard has become competing deep into December.
What Happened in 2025?
The 2025 season represented a transition.
Jordan Gill took over as Gunter’s athletic director and head football coach after longtime head coach Jake Fieszel’s extraordinary run leading the program. Gunter ISD identifies 2025 as Gill’s first season in the AD/HFC role. (Gunter ISD)
And the Tigers still went deep into the postseason.
Gunter reached the 2025 Class 3A Division II state semifinal, where Wall defeated the Tigers 28-25. (Texas Football)
That’s an important piece of context heading into 2026.
The three-year state championship streak ended.
The standard didn’t.
For most programs, reaching a state semifinal would define an extraordinary season.
For Gunter, it probably created fuel for the next one.
Jordan Gill’s Second Season
The 2026 season will be Jordan Gill’s second year as Gunter’s head football coach and athletic director. (Gunter ISD)
But Gill didn’t arrive as an outsider trying to rebuild the culture.
He had already been part of the Gunter program and coaching staff during its championship era.
That continuity matters.
Gunter ISD summarizes the program around four pillars:
Energy
Accountability
Toughness
Selflessness (Gunter ISD)
The program’s stated plan to win is equally direct:
Play great defense.
Take care of the football and create turnovers.
Score touchdowns in the red zone.
Win the kicking game. (Gunter ISD)
None of that is particularly complicated.
That’s probably the point.
Gunter football has built a reputation around being exceptionally disciplined at fundamental football.
The Complete 2026 Gunter Tigers Football Schedule
The Gunter Tigers QB Club has published the 2026 varsity schedule, while Gunter ISD’s official football page says its composite schedule was updated August 17, 2026. (Gunter QB Club)

2026 Regular Season
August 28 — at Sealy
Away
The Tigers don’t ease into the year.
Gunter opens its regular season with a significant road trip to Sealy.
For a program with state-title ambitions, playing quality opponents outside the immediate area provides exactly the type of early-season test coaches often want.
September 4 — Open / No Game Listed
The published schedule currently shows no varsity game for this week. (Gunter QB Club)
September 11 — at Jefferson
Away — 7:30 p.m.

Circle this one.
Gunter vs. Pottsboro
Few games on the schedule should generate more Grayson County interest.
It’s a matchup between two local communities with strong football traditions, and the stands should reflect it.
For Grayson County Line, this will naturally be one of the biggest local games of the season.
October 23 — vs. Whitesboro
Homecoming — 7:00 p.m.
Another major Grayson County matchup.
Gunter hosts Whitesboro for Homecoming. (Gunter QB Club)
Gunter.
Whitesboro.

Late October.
That’s Texas high school football.
October 30 — at Life Oak Cliff

Senior Night
Note the unusual date: this game is scheduled for Thursday, November 5 rather than Friday.

Depending on how the district race develops, this could have significant playoff-seeding implications.

Schedule information reflects published team sources as of August 18, 2026 and remains subject to change. (Gunter QB Club)
That depth matters.
Gunter’s success has rarely depended on a single superstar.
The Tigers have traditionally developed waves of players who understand the system long before becoming varsity starters.
A Strong Senior Core
One of the biggest reasons for optimism is the size of Gunter’s senior group.
Championship football programs require talent.
But they also require seniors who understand:
how practice is supposed to look,
how players respond after a loss,
how playoff preparation changes,
how to handle pressure,
and what December football feels like.
A considerable portion of this roster has grown up surrounded by championship expectations.
That institutional knowledge is difficult to quantify.
It’s also one of Gunter’s greatest advantages.
The Biggest Storyline: Moving to 3A Division I
This could define the season.
Gunter’s recent championship run occurred in Class 3A Division II.
In 2026, Dave Campbell’s lists the Tigers in Class 3A Division I. (Texas Football)
For casual fans, the difference may look small.
It isn’t.
Division I generally means facing larger schools within the classification.
The path through November and potentially December will therefore look different.
But if any program is equipped to handle changing circumstances, Gunter’s résumé suggests this one is.
Storyline No. 2: What Does Year Two Under Jordan Gill Look Like?
Every coaching transition changes something.
The first season answers whether continuity can be maintained.
The second begins revealing what the program will look like under its new leader.
Gill’s first team reached the 2025 state semifinal before losing to Wall by three points. (Texas Football)
That’s a remarkably high starting point.
Now comes Year Two.
The question isn’t whether Gunter remains good.
The more interesting question is whether Gill can begin another championship cycle.
Storyline No. 3: Can Gunter Start Another State Championship Streak?
The Tigers won three consecutive state titles:
2022
2023
2024 (Gunter ISD)
That streak ended in 2025.
For most football programs, winning three straight championships sounds almost absurd.
At Gunter, fans have watched it happen.
That changes expectations.
The 2026 Tigers aren’t defending a championship.
They are chasing one again.
There is a difference.
And sometimes being the hunter again can be useful.
Storyline No. 4: Grayson County Rivalries
For readers of Grayson County Line, two dates immediately stand out.
October 16: Gunter at Pottsboro
and
October 23: Whitesboro at Gunter
These aren’t simply games involving teams that happen to be located near one another.
They are opportunities for communities across Grayson County to pack stadiums, support students and celebrate one of the traditions that still connects small-town North Texas.
Expect our coverage to pay particular attention to both.
What Makes Gunter Football Different?
Plenty of communities care about football.
Gunter wins at football.
Consistently.
The Tigers’ results from 2016 through 2024 are almost difficult to comprehend:
Nine consecutive seasons reaching at least the state semifinals.
Seven state championship appearances.
Five titles. (Gunter ISD)
That doesn’t happen because of one great quarterback.
Or one great class.
Or one coach.
Sustained success requires an entire ecosystem.
Players.
Coaches.
Parents.
Youth football.
Strength programs.
School administrators.
Fans.
Booster organizations.
And younger kids watching the varsity team thinking:
Someday that’s going to be me.
That is how tradition reproduces itself.
Friday Night in Gunter
If you’ve recently moved to Gunter and haven’t been to a Tigers football game yet, change that this fall.
You don’t need a player on the field.
You don’t need children in Gunter ISD.
You don’t even need to understand every part of football.
Show up.
Wear blue.
Watch the band.
Watch the cheerleaders.
See the student section.
Talk to neighbors.
Buy something from the concession stand.
Stay until the final whistle.
Because in communities like Gunter, a football game is doing more than determining a winner.
It’s one of the places where the town becomes a town.
Home Games to Circle
If you can only attend a few games this season, start here.
September 18 — Sulphur
The first regular-season home game currently listed.
September 25 — Fort Worth All Saints
Potentially one of the more interesting non-district matchups.
October 23 — Whitesboro
Homecoming.
If you’re picking one game for the complete small-town Texas experience, this is probably it.
November 5 — Pilot Point
Senior Night.
An emotional final regular-season home game with potential district and playoff implications.
Road Game to Circle
October 16 — Gunter at Pottsboro
Grayson County football.
Two communities that care deeply about their programs.
Mid-October.
This has all the ingredients.
How to Follow Gunter Football
Gunter ISD maintains an official football page with schedules and program information.
The district is also encouraging football families to join its communication channels.
For high school and junior-high football updates, Gunter ISD currently lists a Remind code of:
Text @gunterf to 81010. (Gunter ISD)
The Gunter Tigers QB Club also publishes varsity scheduling and program information. (Gunter QB Club)
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and MaxPreps provide additional statewide coverage, scores, rosters and standings. (Texas Football)
And naturally:
Grayson County Line will be following the Tigers throughout 2026.
The Road to Arlington
Every team begins August dreaming about December.
Gunter has a better understanding of that journey than almost anyone.
The UIL has scheduled the 2026 football state championships for December 16-19 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. (University Interscholastic League)
Nobody should be booking Gunter’s spot there in August.
Texas high school football doesn’t work that way.
There will be injuries.
Close games.
Unexpected teams.
Long road trips.
Bad weather.
Turnovers.
Potential upsets.
And an entirely new playoff path in Division I.
But asking whether Gunter can reach Arlington is not unreasonable.
The program has earned that expectation.
Grayson County Line Prediction
The transition to 3A Division I creates legitimate uncertainty.
So does replacing graduating talent.
And reaching a state championship game is extraordinarily difficult regardless of a program’s history.
But Gunter isn’t operating like a normal small-school football program.
This is a team returning experienced upperclassmen inside a system that has produced deep playoff runs essentially every season for a decade.
The 2025 state-semifinal loss may also provide something recent Gunter teams haven’t always had:
a season that ended before Arlington.
That can be powerful motivation.
Our expectation:
Gunter should contend for the District 5-3A Division I championship and once again be a serious threat to make a deep playoff run.
Anything beyond that gets decided on the field.
Exactly where it should.
More Than Football
There’s a reason high school football matters so much in towns across Grayson County.
The players on Friday night are classmates.
The cheerleaders are daughters and sisters.
The band members are neighbors.
The coaches teach kids.
Parents volunteer.
Businesses put signs in their windows.
Former players come home.
Younger players watch from the stands.
Football becomes part competition, part reunion and part civic ritual.
Few programs illustrate that better than Gunter.
The Standard Remains
Five championships.
Seven state-final appearances.
A decade filled with December football.
A coaching transition successfully navigated.
A new division.
A new schedule.
A new senior class.
And now another August arrives.
Past championships don’t score points in 2026.
The banners hanging behind you don’t block anyone.
Reputation doesn’t convert third-and-four.
Every team has to earn its season from zero.
And that’s exactly what makes this year interesting.
The Gunter Tigers aren’t simply defending a reputation.
They’re getting another opportunity to build it.
Friday nights are back.
And in Gunter, expectations are as high as ever.
TL;DR
The 2026 Gunter Tigers enter Jordan Gill’s second season as head coach after reaching the 2025 Class 3A Division II state semifinal, where Gunter fell to Wall 28-25. (Texas Football)
The major change for 2026 is classification: Gunter is now listed in Class 3A Division I and District 5-3A Division I. (Texas Football)
The Tigers bring one of Texas’ strongest recent résumés into the season, having won state championships in 2016, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. (Gunter ISD)
The regular season begins August 28 at Sealy, with major Grayson County games including at Pottsboro on October 16 and Homecoming against Whitesboro on October 23. Senior Night is scheduled for Thursday, November 5 against Pilot Point. (Gunter QB Club)
The expectation remains straightforward: compete for the district championship and position Gunter for another deep playoff run.
