Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge October 2026: Birding, Refuge Roundup, and Family Programs

October is one of the best months to introduce kids—and new Texoma residents—to Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, the big federal refuge on the south shore of Lake Texoma west of Sherman.

Friends of Hagerman NWR published a full October schedule (via a Sept. 25, 2026 North Texas e-News press release). Most events meet at the Visitor Center, 6465 Refuge Road, Sherman, TX 75092, unless noted. Programs are typically free; donations keep the calendar running, and some activities need registration.

October highlights at a glance

Saturday, October 3 — The Little Sit (7:00 a.m.)

Birders gather at Pad-H on the west side of the refuge about 30 minutes before sunrise for a casual bird count modeled after Cornell’s “Big Sit.” Leaders bring spotting scopes and ID tips. Bring a chair, binoculars, and water. GPS for Pad-H: 33.734961, -96.780582. Registration is recommended for weather/location updates via Friends of Hagerman.

This is an easy same-day pairing with Denison’s Fall Festival later in the morning.

Saturday, October 10 — Early Bird Guided Walk (8:00 a.m.) + Refuge Roundup (all day)

Start with an Early Bird Guided Walk along Harris Creek Trail with ornithologist Dr. Wayne Meyer and Master Naturalist Jack Chiles (weather permitting). Binoculars are available to borrow.

Then stay for Refuge Roundup, an all-day National Wildlife Refuge Week celebration. The published lineup includes:

  • 10:00 a.m. — Climate change talk (Professor George Diggs)
  • Tram tours at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. (reservations required)
  • Children’s activities with Puddles in the Pavilion (10 a.m.–noon and 1–3 p.m.) and storytelling at noon
  • Ice Hole Food Truck (11 a.m.–2 p.m.)
  • Sparrows program (11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.)
  • Live snakes program (12:45–1:45 p.m.)
  • Butterfly garden walk and monarch tagging (1–3 p.m.)
  • Spiders program (2–3 p.m.)

Saturday, October 17 — Refuge cleanup (8:00 a.m.) + Refuge Rocks youth program (10:00 a.m.)

Morning cleanup volunteers meet at the Visitor Center (bring gloves, bucket, litter picker, water; scouts welcome). At 10:00 a.m., Refuge Rocks offers a free youth program for ages 5–10: “Creatures of the Night,” a hands-on look at nocturnal adaptations.

Ongoing: tram tours and butterfly garden

Tram tours for small groups (about 6–8 guests) are offered Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. with reservations required. The butterfly garden stays open sunrise to sunset.

Newcomer tips

  • Download or photograph a refuge map at the Visitor Center before you explore Wildlife Drive.
  • Cell service can be patchy; screenshot event details.
  • Pack layers; lakeside mornings in October swing cooler than Sherman parking lots.
  • Keep pets and drones within posted rules—this is an active wildlife refuge, not a city park.
