From Gunter Brew House to a bagel shop
If 515 Preston Road sounds familiar, that is because it used to be Gunter Brew House, a “coffee to cocktails” spot that served breakfast, lunch and dinner and hosted live music nights. On Feb. 10, 2025, the Brew House owners posted that the shop would be transitioning into a Legacy Bagels over the following few weeks, and asked regulars to give the new tenant the same warm welcome they had received (archived Brew House posts). Around the same time, Legacy Bagels president and CEO Tim Phillips announced on LinkedIn that the brand was bringing its “freshly baked, never frozen bagels” to Gunter and would be opening soon.
Legacy Bagels also runs a shop on University Drive in Prosper, and the Brew House announcement described the brand as having locations in Prosper and Celina at the time. According to the company’s About page, Phillips is a U.S. Air Force veteran originally from Rome, New York, who grew up on New York-style bagels and took the helm in August 2024. The brand bills itself as veteran-founded.
The Gunter shop also fits a bigger pattern in town. A local real estate blog that tracked new Gunter businesses in 2026 listed Legacy Bagels alongside a fruit market, a barbershop and other new storefronts strung along TX-289 rather than on the older downtown blocks. If you have not driven Preston Road through Gunter in a while, this is one of the newer signs you will notice.
What makes these bagels different
The short version is sourdough and time. Legacy Bagels says its bagels are made from scratch with all-natural ingredients using a three-day process that includes 48 hours of cold fermentation, then hand-rolled and baked for a crisp outside and a chewy inside (Legacy Bagels). That slow, cold rest is the step sourdough bakers use to build flavor, and it is a big part of why these bagels eat chewier than a soft grocery-store bagel.

The menu splits bagels into two groups. The classic flavors are plain, sesame, cinnamon sugar, garlic, onion, poppyseed and salt. The premium flavors are everything, asiago, bacon cheddar, blueberry, jalapeño cheddar, chocolate chip and cinnamon raisin. Spreads include plain, strawberry, honey almond, veggie, blueberry, jalapeño, chive and onion, chocolate chip, butter and a rotating seasonal flavor.
What to order
If you want a sandwich, the menu has three tiers. The classics are familiar picks: a veggie bagel with avocado, spinach, tomato and cucumber, plus ham, BLT, turkey and egg-and-cheese sandwiches. The premium sandwiches include the Italiano (ham, pepperoni, salami and pepper jack on an asiago bagel) and the California Sunrise (ham, eggs, avocado and American cheese on an everything bagel). The specialty sandwiches are the ones to try if you only order once: El Bandito stacks sausage, egg, pepper jack, bacon and jalapeño sauce on a jalapeño cheddar bagel, The Legacy piles sausage, ham, bacon, egg and American cheese on a salt bagel, and there is a classic lox and cream cheese with tomato, capers and onion.

Then there are what the shop calls Legacy Exclusives, which is where it stops being a typical bagel counter. Cheese and pepperoni pizza bagels are on the menu, and so are four bagel burgers: a bacon cheddar burger on a bacon cheddar bagel, a classic burger on a plain bagel, a breakfast burger with bacon and egg, and the Texas Outlaw with pepper jack, avocado, bacon and jalapeño sauce on a jalapeño cheddar bagel. If someone in your group does not want breakfast food at noon, these are the answer.

On the drink side, expect drip coffee in three sizes, cold brew, Americanos, lattes, cappuccinos and espresso shots, with vanilla, lavender, hazelnut, caramel and mocha syrups and whole, low-fat, almond or oat milk. There is also sweet, unsweetened and chai tea, plus juice and bottled sodas.
Feeding a team, a classroom or a Saturday crowd
Bagels travel well, and the menu is built for group orders. The Half Dozen is any six bagels with one large spread. The Legacy 13 is any 13 bagels with no spread, and the Baker’s Choice lets the shop pick a variety of 13 bagels and includes two large spreads. For bigger events, the catering page mentions office breakfasts, brunches, holiday orders, build-your-own bagel bars and coffee service, and asks you to contact your local shop for options and pricing. For Gunter, that means calling (469) 222-2317.
Good to know before you go
- It closes early. The posted hours end at 1:30 p.m. every day, so this is not an after-school or dinner stop. Call ahead around holidays.
- Order ahead on busy mornings. The Gunter page links to an online ordering page, and the shop is also listed for delivery on Uber Eats.
- Prices are not on the menu page. Check the online ordering page for current prices before you place a big order.
- Reviews on the brand site are brand-wide. The Google reviews shown on the Legacy Bagels website are the same on every page, and at least one is about the Prosper shop, so read them as a take on the brand rather than on the Gunter shop specifically.
How it fits into breakfast in Gunter
Gunter now has a few different morning options. Sprinkle Donut Gunter, also on TX-289, is the pick for a box of donuts and quick bakery items. Legacy Bagels is the better choice when you want a real sandwich, an espresso drink or a dozen bagels for the office. For a farm-store cafe, Preston Trail Farms Cafe Gunter is another option on the same highway. If you get hungry after Legacy closes, Andrea’s Pizza Gunter and Marilina’s Kitchen Gunter are good next stops for pizza or tacos; check their hours before you go.
