Gunter TX Utilities: Water, Trash, Power & Internet
Updated October 28, 2026.
If you live inside Gunter city limits, your water and sewer come from Mustang Special Utility District (940-440-9561), not the city. Trash and recycling are handled by Alford Services under a city contract, and you pay for them through the City of Gunter (903-433-5185). Atmos Energy supplies natural gas. Electricity depends on your address. Oncor maintains the power lines in much of Grayson County, while some areas get power straight from Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative. Before you sign anything, you should know two things. An older answer on the city’s FAQ page still lists the previous trash hauler. And Mustang has been under one-day-a-week watering rules since June 2025.
This page covers who to call, what it costs and the rules that catch newcomers off guard. For the bigger picture on schools, housing and commutes, start with our Moving to Gunter: Complete Guide.

Water and sewer: Mustang SUD
The City of Gunter’s water page says the city doesn’t own or run any water or wastewater operations. Mustang SUD provides the service, reads the meters and sends the bills. Its office is at 7985 FM 2931 in Aubrey. You can start service with the online application, and you can pay by phone at (844) 201-8794 or online.

What a bill looks like. Mustang’s 2026 monthly rates start with a $33.83 water availability fee. If your home is on Mustang sewer, there’s also a sewer charge of $62.14 when you use under 8,000 gallons, or $69.30 when you use more. Water is billed in tiers per 1,000 gallons:
- 0–3,000 gallons: $3.31
- 3,000–9,000: $4.64
- 9,000–15,000: $5.79
- 15,000–23,000: $7.05
- 23,000–31,000: $10.78
- 31,000–40,000: $13.74
- Over 40,000: $19.25
Gunter adds a 10% franchise fee on top of the availability fee and your water usage.
Here’s what those rates add up to for a Gunter home on water and sewer:
- 6,000 gallons: about $125.59. That’s $33.83 availability, $23.85 for water, $62.14 for sewer and $5.77 in franchise fee.
- 10,000 gallons (a heavier summer month with sprinklers): about $154.43. That’s $33.83 availability, $43.56 for water, $69.30 for sewer and $7.74 in franchise fee.
These are our own estimates from Mustang’s posted rates. Your bill may include other line items.
Billing rules worth knowing. Mustang’s billing page lays these out:
- Bills go out on the 1st and are due on the 15th.
- To avoid a disconnect, your payment has to arrive by 4:30 p.m. the day before the disconnect date.
- Not receiving a bill doesn’t excuse late fees.
- Autopay works only by bank draft. Mustang can’t set up automatic card payments.
- Mustang is installing smart meters for all customers, and there’s no opt-out.
Watering days: Stage 2 is still in effect
Mustang moved to Stage 2 of its Drought Contingency Plan on June 2, 2025, and the one-day-a-week schedule is still posted today. Sprinklers and hose-end sprinklers can run only during these windows:
- Even-numbered addresses: Sunday after 8 p.m. until Monday at 6 a.m.
- Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesday after 8 p.m. until Thursday at 6 a.m.
- Commercial properties and HOA common areas: Friday after 8 p.m. until Saturday at 6 a.m.
On every day, automatic irrigation and hose-end sprinklers are off-limits from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can use a hand-held hose, drip irrigation or a soaker hose at any time. Mustang says it may fine violators. If you’re moving into a new build with a fresh lawn, check the schedule before the sod goes down.

Trash and recycling: Alford Services
The city’s Trash & Recycling page names Alford Services as the only residential and commercial hauler inside city limits. You pay through the city’s online payment portal. Ignore the older FAQ answer that lists Republic Services, because the department page is the current one. The city’s rate sheet lists these charges:
- Residential curbside trash: $20.00 a month
- Recycling: $1.00 a month
- Extra cart: $9.68
- Residential late fee: $5.00
Here’s how pickup works inside city limits:
- Trash: Every Tuesday in a 95-gallon blue cart. Put it at the curb by 7 a.m. with the handles facing the road, the trash bagged and the lid closed. Trucks can run until 7 p.m.
- Recycling (optional): A green 95-gallon cart picked up on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday. Sign up through the city. Accepted items are plastic bottles and containers, food and drink cans, paper and flattened cardboard. Keep out glass, bagged recyclables, plastic bags and film, foam, food or liquids, and batteries.
- Yard waste: Tuesdays, in two-ply paper yard bags. Brush bundles can weigh up to 40 pounds, with branches no more than 6 inches across and 4 feet long.
- Bulky items: Tuesdays, up to one cubic yard (3 by 3 by 3 feet). Appliances with Freon have to be emptied and tagged by a licensed technician first. Paint has to be dry, with the lid off. Construction debris, tires and hazardous waste aren’t accepted.
- Roll-off dumpsters: Alford is the only residential roll-off provider in the city, and you order one through the city.

Gunter address, county rules: Sunset Ranch and rural homes
Some homes with a Gunter mailing address aren’t inside city limits. Sunset Ranch is the biggest example, and its services work differently. Alford holds an exclusive contract with the Sunset Ranch MUD, with this schedule and pricing:
- Trash on Mondays, with carts out by 6 a.m.
- Recycling on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday.
- Bulk pickup on the last Monday of the month.
- $20 a month for the first cart and $10 for each additional cart. Recycling is $15 a month.
- All charges are plus a 5% fuel surcharge and 6.25% sales tax.
The neighborhood’s plat notes say Mustang provides water and sewer and Grayson-Collin Electric provides power. Our guide to Gunter new home communities shows which neighborhoods are in the city and which are in the county.
Homes outside both the city and the MUD contracts arrange trash on their own. Alford’s residential page lists $41, $53 and $65 a month for one, two or three carts. On acreage, plan for well and septic questions as well. Our country living guide for newcomers covers them.

Electricity: Oncor lines or the co-op
Who you call for power depends on which company’s lines serve your address.
- Oncor lines: You’re in Texas’s competitive market, so you choose a retail electric provider and Oncor delivers the power. The state’s Power to Choose site lets you compare plans by ZIP code, and its help line is 1-866-797-4839. The city’s FAQ lists Oncor at 888-313-6862, or 888-313-4747 for outages.
- Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative: You join the co-op and buy power directly from it. Co-ops weren’t required to open to retail competition, so you won’t pick a provider on Power to Choose.
GCEC’s start-service page asks you to apply 5 to 7 business days before your move-in date. It lists these setup fees:
- A $20 membership fee, refunded when you leave the co-op.
- A $35 transfer or reconnect fee.
- A $10 credit check, which decides whether you’ll need a deposit.
If you aren’t sure which company serves a house, ask the seller for a recent bill, or call GCEC before closing. For tips on storms and outages in the country, see our country living guide.
Natural gas and internet
The city lists Atmos Energy as Gunter’s gas supplier. Customer service is 888-286-6700, and the emergency line is 866-322-8667. Not every home has gas service, so ask the seller or builder whether there’s a gas meter before you call.
Internet can change from one street to the next. Enter your exact address on the FCC National Broadband Map to see which providers report service there, then confirm with the provider before you count on a work-from-home setup. The Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative website also promotes fiber from Grayson Collin Communications, so check whether it reaches your street.
Move-in checklist
- Confirm whether the address is inside Gunter city limits or in the county.
- Apply with Mustang SUD for water and sewer, and set up bank-draft autopay if you want it.
- Call City Hall at 903-433-5185 to start trash service, and opt into recycling if you want it.
- Find out whether Oncor or GCEC serves the address. Then pick a provider on Power to Choose, or apply with GCEC 5 to 7 business days ahead.
- Start gas with Atmos if the home has a gas meter.
- Check the FCC map for internet before you schedule an install.
- Set your sprinkler controller to your Stage 2 watering day.
Utilities are one piece of the move. Growing services across the county are another, and our look at Grayson County fire and EMS funding explains why those costs are rising.
