Watson’s Drive In Denison: Carhop Burgers on West Main Since 1956
Watson’s Drive In Denison is the old-school carhop at 631 W Main St, where you pull under a blue-and-white metal awning, order from the stall, and eat a fresh-meat burger in your car. The family has run it at that same spot since 1956, and the phone is (903) 465-4669. If you want one meal in Denison that hasn’t changed much in decades, this is the one: burgers, homemade onion rings, and the chili pack served right in a Fritos bag.

A 1956 carhop that’s still family-run
Watson’s started small. According to Charlie Watson’s family obituary, he bought a K&N Root Beer stand across from what was then McDaniel High School, and he and his wife Pat began cooking hamburgers alongside the root beer and renamed it Watson’s Drive-in. That stand grew into the Watsonburger restaurants around North Texas and southern Oklahoma, but the drive-in on West Main was the first.
Their grandson, Brandon Watson, runs it now. He told Texas Highways that he took over in 2007 after his mother retired, and that his grandfather started the business in 1956 “the same location that I’m running now.” The Texas Historical Commission’s Texas Time Travel directory goes further and calls Watson’s the oldest restaurant in Grayson County.

What to order at Watson’s
Start with a burger. Texas Highways describes the recipes Brandon learned when he took over: fresh-meat burgers, corn dogs, chicken sandwiches, hand-cut fries, Tater Tots, homemade onion rings, and ice cream shakes topped with whipped cream and a cherry. On Restaurantji, where Watson’s holds about a 4.7 from more than 240 ratings, the customer favorites list includes the Porky’s Burger, the cheddar burger, steak finger and chicken finger baskets, homemade onion rings, and the Frito chili cheese wrap.
The order that makes Watson’s different is the chili pack, its take on Frito pie. “Back in the ’60s, they would cut open the side of a Fritos bag and just put the chili, cheese, and onions right inside it,” Brandon told Texas Highways. “We still do that today.” If you’re bringing someone who has never been, get one for the table along with a basket of rings.

How the carhop works
Pull into a stall under the awning, which Texas Highways says has room for 26 cars. Each stall has its own menu board, with baskets, salads, sides, hot dogs, chili, shakes, floats, and sundaes, plus a button you press to place your order. The building keeps its midcentury look, and the tall Watson’s Hamburgers sign still stands over Main Street. Restaurantji reviewers note the indoor seating is small, so most people eat in the car or take food to go. Restaurantji also lists outdoor seating and a kids’ menu, and the stall board says call-in orders are welcome.

Good to know before you go
- Call ahead on hours. Restaurantji lists Watson’s as a lunch and early-supper stop that closes in the early evening and is closed Sundays. Hours can change, so call (903) 465-4669 before you drive.
- No reservations. Restaurantji lists Watson’s as not taking reservations, so just pick an open stall and order.
- Easy to pair with downtown. Watson’s is on the same Main Street as downtown Denison’s shops and restaurants, so it’s an easy add-on to a downtown afternoon.
